In 2011, five New Oxford High School students sustained fatal injuries from a car crash.  New Oxford, as well as surrounding communities, felt the heartache and grief as their families lost their loved ones.  The families affected by this tragedy along with great community support, created a non-profit organization in 2012 to honor their children and the sport they all
loved the most; soccer.

Since the start of the 5 Angels Memorial Soccer Tournament, the non-profit has raised over $16,000 which in part benefits the New Oxford HS Soccer program, given out nine college scholarships,
and has also given the Hanover Soccer Club Youth Program $4,000 along with two sets of goal posts.  The two-day 5th annual tournament, which was held this past weekend, was played at UTZ Soccer Fields in Hanover with a 16-team bracket. Yazoo Mills has proudly donated to this tournament for the last three years and is thrilled to see the out-pour of community support as well as ensuring that kids who want to play soccer, will be able to play with donations from the tournament.

Continuing to be active within our community is a high priority of Yazoo Mills’ and we have been doing so for many years.  We like to give back to local schools and their sports teams.  Over the past year, Yazoo has contributed $1,000.00 to the New Oxford Football Fund to help take their football team, as well as other sports teams, to the next level.

“The donation was put towards a $17,000.00 upgrade of our high school weight room.  We purchased new power lifting equipment, bars, weights, rubber matting, mirrors and a new stereo system.  We have seen a huge increase in participation by our players in our off-season workout program, and I have been very excited about the number of other sports teams at New Oxford who are utilizing the weight room,” says Jason Thurston, Head Football Coach at New Oxford High School.

Getting a proper education is extremely important, starting with our youngest generations and up.  Tuition prices are climbing year after year and today’s economy is taking a toll on students and their parents when applying for and attending college.  Earning good grades allows students to be able to apply for scholarships, grants, etc. and helps provide them with a better college experience financially.

In May of 2013, New Oxford High School recognized two outstanding students for their academic achievements.  Shainann Daniels (Art) and Amina Colonia (Business) were picked by faculty in their respective departments and each received a $500.00 scholarship from Yazoo Mills.  We look forward to giving away two more scholarships in May 2014.
