Layke Ensor is a driven individual who is passionate about helping out his teammates and leading them to achieve daily success within their roles. An energetic employee who leads by example, Layke embodies Yazoo’s mission, vision and values and strives each day to continue helping Yazoo be the leader in the paper tube and core industry.
Manufacturing has always been in Layke’s blood – he previously worked for a local manufacturer as a forklift driver, material handler and production operator. Eight years ago, Layke set out on his journey here at Yazoo Mills on 2nd shift as a Winding Operator. He then transferred to a 1st shift Winding Operator position then floater and was recently promoted to his most current role as a Lead in the Winding department.
As a Lead, Layke is focused on learning the supervisory role as he manages six employees and their respective machines, helps maintain efficiency, collaborates with his teammates on innovative solutions and maintains integrity day in and day out.
Layke contributes his tenure to enjoying his job and the family atmosphere here at Yazoo; a home away from home, where everyone has each other’s backs. The ability to be able to teach the younger employees and keeping the company’s goals at the forefront are what motivates him.
In his spare time, you will find Layke pulling his camper to a new site to enjoy the outdoors with his wife and five kids as well as locating a cool, new hiking trail that allows them to explore and create memories.

This is been a great debate for many decades. It’s a very simple concept that is taught to us throughout our years but it can also be a controversial as well. This very simple concept can be applied in every day life and changes for all types of circumstances. For example, if you’re going through a fast food drive-thru, you’re more likely concerned about quantity versus quality… how many items can you get for a small amount of money? Whereas at a restaurant, you’ll most likely be more concerned about the quality of the food you are receiving.
In today’s competitive world, a lot of companies “claim” to have quality products when in reality, they are more focused on pumping out a high quantity of products in a short amount of time. This typically results in lower quality work that’s hiding behind a product that a company manufactured by cutting corners and it marketing it as a “quality” product.

In a world where we can have basically (almost) anything we want at our fingertips, we soon forget the process it takes to make a product. A product cannot amount to anything great until it has its starting point. In the converting industry, that starting point is a core.
Converting is the essential part of the process of taking raw materials and creating a finished product. This kind of process is crucial for industries specializing in adhesives, tapes, labels, film, fabric, flexible packaging, etc. Converting cores are manufactured with each application in mind. The cores must maintain their durability during and after the process of adding a product on to them. Slitting and rewinding is a common process that Converters use in their operations. A machine takes a product, unwinds the material through a series of blades that slits the material into smaller widths then rewinds it onto a new roll. We’ve been in business since 1902 and we are STILL growing, more and more each year. With our continuous growth, we are pleased to announce the hiring of Claire Alexander, who has joined our Order Prep Department. Claire, a graduate from Shippensburg University with a degree in Geography/Surveying/Data Collecting & Processing, joins the Yazoo team as the new Document Preparation Specialist.
Before coming to Yazoo, Claire worked for a student loan company in customer service and a Navy support center as a Contract Digitizing Technician. Her knowledge, background and persistence helped pave the way for her new role with our company. As a Document Preparation Specialist, Claire is responsible for pulling orders from the dashboard to prepare them for production, cross-checking all of the important details such as order specs, shipping requests, payment information and packaging specifications. Once she has everything filled in, she prints a production order along with any specs that show the complete order details and shipping labels, then hands them over to the scheduler so they can get the production process started.
For Claire, she applied at Yazoo for a chance at a new experience. She saw an opportunity to gain new skills, be a part of an amazing company and have a much closer drive to home. She enjoys the people she gets to work with. Claire said “Everyone is friendly and willing to help if I have a question and it seems like everyone is on the same track of working together in order to keep the business in proper functioning order.” She also enjoys getting to learn a job that is new and different, feels appreciated by management which was hard to come by at her previous jobs, and the overall friendliness atmosphere that Yazoo presents. Claire continues to say “The pleasantries go a long way here – whether that’s a friendly hello in the morning or someone complimenting how great of a job you’re doing.”
In her spare time, you can find Claire buried in a good book, playing video games or watching a show. She enjoys having board game and cocktail nights with friends, spending time with her husband and playing with their two cats and two dogs. Congrats and welcome aboard, Claire. We are pleased to announce the recent hiring of Mark Staub to the position of Order Prep at our Hanover Distribution Center. For 8 years, Mark was living in the Pittsburgh area and attended Robert Morris University for Sports Management and eventually found his way back to the area. Mark comes to us from a local headwear manufacturer, where he was a distinguished Shipping Associate, prepping finished orders to be shipped to customers and making sure his department maintained a high-level of customer service.
In his new role of Order Prep at Yazoo, Mark prepares customer orders to be pushed through to production. He checks rates, figures out how the order will ship, prints packaging labels, prints the customer specification sheet to attach to the order and then sends the order through to the plant. He also enters job orders for stock replenishment. What drew him to apply at Yazoo was his neighbor, who also is a Yazoo employee, was very enthusiastic about working here and encouraged him to apply. Mark said “I feel like if a person is really trying to get you to work where he/she is, then there is a pretty good reason to also want to work there.”
When asked what he likes most about Yazoo, he replied “I genuinely do enjoy the people I work with and who I work for. While I do get busy quite often, what I like most is that when I clock out, I’m done. I’m fortunate enough to say that my work ‘doesn’t follow me home.’ The pay is also super sweet – the best in the area, by far!” In his spare time, you can find Mark chasing around his three kids, spending time with his wife, playing the card game called Pitch and going to see a good movie in theaters.

Meet Neil Kelley, who was recently promoted to 2nd shift Winding Lead. Before his journey to Yazoo Mills five years ago, Neil was involved in the restaurant business as a manager as well as being self-employed with running his own landscaping business.
Neil’s first position he held at Yazoo was a Winder Operator. Within two years of working for the company, he moved up to a trainer then a floater and is now enjoying his promotion as a lead person on 2nd shift. Additionally, he cross trained in our Shipping and Recut Departments. In his current role, he trains other employees, makes sure that all work orders are manufactured in a timely manner and are correct, makes sure that employees are well-trained on how to complete the jobs, ensures that communication is being held in the Winding Department, and is always lending a helping hand when needed – whether that’s running a machine, helping out in Shipping, bailing waste, or giving breaks.
When asked what he likes best about working at Yazoo, he couldn’t just pick one thing. Neil said “Yazoo has a great work environment – it’s fast paced and always keeps me moving. The company recognizes hard workers and is willing to invest in them.” He continued to rave about how Yazoo is willing to take advice on how to continue bettering the company as well as investing a lot of money in training its employees.
In his spare time, you’ll find him spending time with his family as his kids mean the world to him. Being in the outdoors gives him great enjoyment, whether that’s hunting, fishing, or hiking – he loves doing it all. Additionally, he enjoys occasional yard work as well as working around the house on little projects – he gets great enjoyment out of that. Congrats on your promotion, Neil – you’ve worked hard for it!

Meet Rob Boone. Rob started his career at Yazoo Mills 11 years ago as a dayshift Winding Operator and quickly found himself in a floater position in our Winding Department. Throughout the years, Rob has proved that his work ethic, training, and knowledge of our company, products, and employees is his priority and continues to find ways to improve the operations at Yazoo Mills.
Recently, Rob accepted a Lead position at our Hanover Distribution Center located in Hanover, PA. Within the new role, he is scheduling, checking products and gathering materials needed to help make sure the work is flowing smoothly. What he likes most about working at Yazoo is “the challenges of troubleshooting issues and getting to know my coworkers better.” In his spare time, you can find Rob spending time with his family, camping, enjoying the outdoors and taking trips to the shooting range. Congrats on your well-deserved promotion, Rob!

The last and final phase of the expansion at our Hanover Distribution Center is finally complete. We wouldn’t be able to operate as one of the leading manufacturers of 100% recycled paper tubes and cores if we didn’t have the state-of-the-art equipment like we do. Yazoo Mills is consistently reinvesting in our people, our equipment, and our facilities to remain an industry leader.
Phase four of the production expansion at our Hanover Distribution Center included the installation of five winders custom built to fit Yazoo’s specifications. The installation of the winders have helped create more scheduling flexibility, assisted the company to enhance efficiency with processing more orders and has added an additional 20,000 square feet of manufacturing space. The additional winding capacity will allow Yazoo to remain the supplier of choice and industry leader with consistent quality, excellent service, and continue to have the fastest shipping time in the industry at 48 hours, guaranteed. Between our two manufacturing facilities, Yazoo now operates a total of 15 winders.
Communication, coordination, and teamwork were major key factors during the several months of planning it took to prepare and layout the new manufacturing space. Yazoo’s supervisors and Maintenance Department worked together with the winding machine manufacturing companies to guarantee that the winding lines were designed and built to meet Yazoo’s specifications.
